Charity: 2008 London Marathon

Parish councillor Steven Smith has run the London Marathon less than two months after spending eight-days trekking in the Arctic Circle.

Steven Smith, 44, who lives in City Road, Radnage, is trying to raise £100,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The charity is close to the Radnage Parish councillor's heart after his mum Genifer died of the fatal disease ten years ago. The condition leaves people unable to walk, talk and eat, and affects around 5,000 people in the country at any time.

Around 35,000 ran in the marathon on Sunday, with 34,420 people finishing the race.

Mr Smith, managing director of Professional IT, set himself a target of £25,000 from the two trips. He has raised nearly £20,000 so far and is expecting to reach around £22,000 in the next few weeks. Speaking on Monday after the race, he said: "I am just sitting here feeling like I've been hit by a truck today. That was a challenge from hell yesterday, a great experience but the pain."

His younger brother, Timothy, 36, also took part in the race, which was his second time. Mr Smith added: "We went off on different starts so I never caught up with him. We were very close but didn't see each other.

"It was a great moment at the end when we met up. It was very emotional."
